Enhanced Rider Scheme & advanced motorcycle training FAQ

What is DVSA accredited Enhanced Rider Scheme?
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) enhanced rider scheme checks your motorcycle riding skills and provides training to help you improve. The scheme can help you become a safer rider and develop your motorcycling skills to an advanced level.
If you successfully complete the scheme, you’ll get a DVSA certificate of competence. You can use it to get discounts with most motorcycle insurers.
What is the difference to other forms of advanced riding training, such as RoSPA or IAM?
There are many forms of advanced riding training in the UK, and they are all beneficial. RoSPA and IAM qualifications are the most popular, however they require significant time commitment. Typically, after several weeks of training you take the test with an independent examiner. IAM is a qualification for life, while RoSPA needs a re-test every three years.
ERS could be the right training for you to ease you into the world of advanced motorcycling, while providing you a lot of the same benefits, and a good starting point should you want to develop your skills further.
Who can benefit from the training?
You will need to have a valid motorcycle licence to enroll. The training might suit you best if you:
- have just passed your motorcycle test,
- are returning to riding after a break,
- are returning to riding after a break, or
- simply want to check your riding standard.
Are you an accredited DVSA instructor?
Yes. You can find me on the DVSA website. Assuming that you are local to Telford or Shropshire, please key in your postcode in the search box.
What are the contents of the training?
There are 7 “core modules” to cover in the ERS course:
- structured planned approach to riding
- defensive riding and hazard awareness
- progress and use of speed
- overtaking and filtering
- bends and corners
- slow control
- developing the correct rider attitude
Although there is no formal test, these areas will be graded throughout your training using ‘Red’, ‘Amber’ and ‘Green’. You will need to achieve at least ‘Amber’ grade in all the core modules to successfully complete your training and receive the certificate.
How long will my training take?
Please refer to the page describing what your training will look like. Generally, between a day and a couple of days.
How much does it cost?
I charge a flat fee £220, for which you get minimum of one full day of training on the road (following a short assessment ride), a completion certificate and a detailed training report tailored around your strengths and areas for development. You will not pay more if you require up to extra two days of training to reach the ERS standard.
